Fair Decisions. Equal Justice.
Richard Renner.

Why is Richard Renner running for Juvenile Court Judge?

Richard Renner believes that a fresh new voice is needed in the Tuscarawas County’s Juvenile Court -- one that takes the time to listen to all the parties, get to the bottom of cases, and make the right decisions.

Richard Renner wants every child, every parent, every foster parent, every person who comes before the Court to know that they will be heard. A court is where the government has a duty to listen to the people. Richard treats every person with dignity and respect. He wants every party to know what the court expects.

Richard Renner believes in grandparents rights. When grandparents have been caregivers, they have a right to be heard as parties. They should not have to fight or appeal just to be heard. Sometimes grandparents really are wise. We should listen to them.

Richard Renner is concerned about our tax dollars. By taking the time to listen in each case, he will find the solutions that are better for families and our pocket books. The wrong decisions are too expensive for tax payers.

Richard Renner remembers how the current judge said 12-year-old Anthony Harris had killed Devan Duniver. He agrees with the Court of Appeals that our current judge made a mistake, and that the police interview was not a reliable. The Court of Appeals held that, "we disagree with the juvenile court’s conclusion that appellant’s confession was voluntary, as it pertains to the portion of the interview conducted by Chief Vaughn." Richard Renner believes that our current judge’s decision was a mistake. The judge went along with a decision to stop investigating other leads, and focus on the one interview of one child. No physical evidence linked him to this horrible crime. Other leads were not pursued. Devan’s killer remains at large. Read the Court of Appeals decision by clicking here. Read Sean Rapacki’s article, "Bullied: When kids confess under duress," from the Cleveland Free Times.

Richard Renner will devote himself to each case to do what is best for our neighborhoods and our children. He believes in making troubled families stronger, one family at a time. He believes we can do better than using boilerplate sentencing. He will seek the most appropriate solution according to each family’s need.

What will Richard Renner bring to office if elected?

Richard Renner believes that justice should not be given according to income, race, color or creed. He believes that equal justice is at the root of our Constitution, and he will work to bring fair and unbiased decisions to our courtrooms. He believes that when grandparents have been active in a child's life, they deserve a chance to be heard as parties. He also believes in taking steps to make justice more accessible to the families of Tuscarawas County.

  • Richard Renner believes that appearing in court during office hours is a burden on working families, and will seek to expand court hours. He plans to start by offering hearings on Monday evenings between 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (when the building is open for the title office) and on Saturdays for those parties who request it.
  • Richard Renner believes that child support cases need to be heard and decided as quickly as possible and will work to design a "fast track" docket to handle them. He promises to hear more of these cases himself, as opposed to referring them to a magistrate.
  • Richard Renner believes in being proactive in identifying at risk families and referring them to the appropriate services. When services are lacking, he believes in speaking out to make things happen. He believes in using every resource available to improve the quality of life in Tuscarawas County.
Richard Renner supports the right of court employees to form a union if they so choose. He promises not to discharge court employees without good cause and due process. Read the endorsement of the AFL-CIO Labor Council.

Richard Renner promises to uphold the law and decide each case fairly and impartially.

Why should I vote for Richard Renner on March 4th?

"I am devoted to the safety of our working families. Together, we can make our communities safer and our families stronger. I value the safety, security and pride we have in our neighborhoods. As Probate and Juvenile Court Judge, I will bring equal justice to Tuscarawas County."
